Daniel Mérida Joins Alcaraz and Sinner in Umag History with Breakthrough ATP Title
The 21-year-old Spaniard defeated Damir Džumhur 6–1, 5–7, 6–2 to claim his maiden ATP Tour title at the Plava Laguna Croatia Open Umag.
With the victory, Mérida has written his name into the history of the tournament, becoming the third-youngest champion in Umag this decade.
“It was a crazy match,” Mérida said during his on-court interview after the final.
Reflecting on his breakthrough victory, Mérida added: “Two of the best guys in the world, so it’s amazing to be in this group of players. Of course, they are far away, but I will keep working to try and get as close as possible to them.”
Mérida is also the eighth first-time champion on the ATP Tour this season, marking another important milestone in what has been a breakthrough year for the young Spaniard.
